What to look for in a designer

What should you look for in a designer?
You can find articles on this subject online, many with checklists. In fact, I’ll link a few at the bottom of this post. These articles will suggest scrutinizing a potential designer’s work, reading testimonials from clients, and looking into their education and experience, among other criteria. These are all important, of course. But the factor that will most impact the outcome of your work together is the quality of your relationship.
However, you can hire the most sought-after, highly rated and costly design professional out there, but if your communication doesn’t flow easily, if a comfortable rapport does not exist, the work produced will inevitably be a disappointment. Authenticity, which is vital to a successful brand, is rooted in trust. Trust allows the designer to draw out the client’s story, allows for honest feedback, and encourages the client to take risks, breaking through barriers to reveal the essence of a business’s identity. Trust enables the discovery of what is unique, and therefore compelling, about the identity of the business and the person behind it.
I believe an earnest, early conversation to reveal the potential for a solid, productive relationship between client and designer is a must. It should be an enjoyable discussion, with much listening done on the part of the designer. Questions should be encouraged. Both parties should leave the talk excited about the possibilities of the work to come, and feel as if they’ve just made a new friend.
It is imperative to me that my clients love not only the work we produce, but also the experience of working with me. That is why I invest so much time in the early days of a relationship, before a potential client has even signed on. That investment of time is a quality I would insist upon from any professional whom I would entrust with something as important as the crafting of my brand.
